From Designer to Director: How Leong Jingwei Redefines Interior Practices

Leong Jingwei is an interior designer and the Founder and Director of Interior Artist Pte Ltd, where he defines the firm’s vision and leads its execution across creative and operational functions. With a background in interior design and years of project experience, he turns strategic vision into crafted spaces while upholding the highest design standards from concept to completion. True to the company’s slogan, “Building your imagination into reality,” he ensures every client’s vision is transformed into a livable space.

Jingwei’s Journey: Crafting Homes

Jingwei’s journey into interior design began eight years ago as an apprentice at an established interior design firm in Singapore. That early experience laid a strong technical foundation and exposed the realities of the industry. Over time, he sought to push beyond design itself—into how a company operates, evolves, and nurtures its people.

Driven by innovation and a gap in mentorship, he started his own firm to create a different work culture and design approach. Much of his early learning came through trial and error, so he built a company centered on one-on-one mentorship to give designers creative and technical confidence without the same struggle.

This mindset shaped his design philosophy, ‘The Blend Theory,’ layering modern, minimalist, industrial, and luxury elements into a cohesive, personalized space. Rather than chasing trends, the approach stays timeless and adaptable, giving clients a home they can grow into.

At the core, Jingwei’s passion is simple: to create a home that offers comfort and warmth after a long day.

The Motivation behind the Journey

Jingwei Co-founded Interior Artist early in his career, driven by ambition and a conviction to reshape how design firms operate—from creative direction to work culture. After gaining hands-on experience, he wanted to lead, not just execute.

The turning point came when he connected with three like-minded friends who shared the same vision and values. Together, they brought diverse experiences and perspectives and a shared vision: build a firm rooted in innovation, mentorship, and collaboration.

Their motivation was to address gaps they had lived through—limited mentorship, right team dynamics, and slow adoption of new tools. Structured one-on-one mentorship and a supportive, family-like culture became core to the Interior Artist’s model.

Their goal was to create thoughtful spaces for clients and a progressive environment where the team can thrive.

The Primary Hurdles Along the Way

Jingwei’s biggest shift was moving from designer to business owner—mastering options, finances, clients, and team dynamics all at once.

In Singapore’s competitive market, the young firm earned trust through consistency. Each project built credibility, with a focus on quality and service.

Building culture also took time. With co-founders from different backgrounds, aligning systems and living their values daily became key.

Cash flow,  coordination, and industry changes forced structure and adaptability. Every obstacle reinforced the mission: deliver good design with purpose, integrity, and a foundation for long-term growth.

The Philosophy  behind Interior Artist

Founded in 2021, Interior Artist began as a passion-driven venture by four friends, with years of interior design experience from different firms. United by a shared vision—to redefine interior spaces with creativity and precision—the small team at Serangoon  Road has since grown into a dynamic studio of 20 designers,  now operating from a larger space that reflects its growth and ambitions.

At the heart of Interior Artist is a simple philosophy: great design begins with genuine understanding. Every space should be a reflection of the people who live or work in it, so the team takes a personalized and collaborative approach, translating lifestyle, needs,  and aspirations into interiors that are compelling,  practical, comfortable, and timeless.

Jingwei and his partners also emphasize craftsmanship, innovation, and adaptability. They continuously explore materials, technologies, and design trends to keep their work forward-thinking, while still grounded in function.

The mission is to craft spaces that go beyond aesthetics—environments that enhance everyday living and create belonging.  Each project is a partnership built on trust, creativity, and attention to detail, transforming ideas into meaningful, well-designed realities.

Designing for Feeling, Not Just Form

For Jingwei, emotional resonance begins with listening. One client simply wanted “a home  that helps me unwind after a long day,” with no style in mind—just a feeling. That approach defines the Interior Artist’s process.

The team looks beyond visuals to understand how clients live and how they want a space to feel. Whether the goal is a calm and restful retreat or a warm gathering place, every decision is made with intention. Materials, lighting, flow, textures, and natural light are used to shape the atmosphere over time.

When that project finished, the client said, “This is exactly how I imagined it to feel.” Moments like this  define the goal: not just visual appeal, but homes that feel personal, comforting, and truly theirs.

Creating Harmony in Form, Function, and  Comfort

According to Jingwei, harmony starts with spatial planning. Layout must support daily routines and creative, intuitive flow—the foundation of function and comfort. He balances aesthetics with practicality. Carpentry, furniture, and storage are chosen for how they serve the user, not just how they look.

Materials and lightning complete the equation. The right texture adds warmth and durability, while layered lighting sets the mood and enhances comfort. When layout, materials, lighting, and details work together, that space feels effortless—form, function, and comfort in balance.

Building Trust and Connection

Trust and long-term relationships are built through consistency, transparency,  and genuine care. From the very first interaction, Jingwei and his team focus on clear and honest communication—setting realistic expectations and being upfront about timelines. By understanding each client’s needs early, they deliver tailored, practical solutions that make decisions feel confident.

Reliability seals it. Staying involved, responsive, and doing what they say they will do turns projects into long-term connections.

Staying Out Through Substance

Jingwei attributes the growth to consistency, adaptability, and brand clarity. Client experience is central. From consultation to handover, the firm emphasizes transparency, responsiveness,  and a highly personalized approach. That trust drives referrals and repeat clients.

Internal culture fuels external results. One-on-one mentorship and a supportive, collaborative environment keep designers sharp creatively and technically, which leads to better client results. Staying relevant matters. The team tracks design trends, new materials, and advancements in technology to deliver fresh, forward-thinking solutions while still maintaining practicality.

Designing Asia’s Intentional Future

Looking ahead, Jingwei envisions Interior Artist growing beyond a design firm that meaningfully shapes interior design in Asia.

He and his team see the future as more intentional—where aesthetics,  functionality, and technology are seamlessly integrated into daily living. The firm aims to lead this shift by embracing innovation in smart home integration, sustainable materials, and more efficient design and build processes that enhance both the client experience and long-term usability. Yet it believes the human aspect remains essential: as cities accelerate, interior spaces should provide comfort, balance, and emotional connection.

Regionally, Interior Artist plans to expand across Asia, adapting its design philosophy to diverse cultures while maintaining a signature blend of creativity, practicality, and authenticity.

Words of Wisdom

Jingwei advises aspiring designers to build a strong foundation before chasing recognition. Interior design goes beyond creativity—it requires technical knowledge, problem-solving, and a real understanding of how people live in a space. Master the fundamentals first.

The path isn’t glamorous. Expect challenges, rejections, and pressure. Growth comes from pushing through with resilience and continuous learning. Most importantly, stay grounded in your purpose. Focus on creating real value and meaningful experiences; success follows the work.
